Choosing to have an asphalt driveway is a great decision. It is not only an affordable option, but the black top will look sleek and clean. However, in order to keep you asphalt driveway looking this way, there are a few different things that you are going to need to do. Doing these simple things will not only keep your driveway looking great, but it will also keep it structurally sound as well. Here are three things that you can do to keep your asphalt in good condition.

Sealcoat The Asphalt

When your driveway is first poured, a sealcoat is going to be placed on it. This sealcoat will protect the surface of the asphalt from a variety of things, such as water, oil, salt, car fluids, or any other chemicals or substances that could potentially stain or break down and crack your driveway. To put a sealcoat on your driveway, you will need to clean your driveway and the pour the sealant in small areas using a squeegee or stiff broom to spread it around. You will then want to spread it around so that it is thin and it is advised that you do two coats of the sealant. You will want to do this every 3 years, or as soon as you think you are starting seeing small hairline cracks in your driveway. This is a great way to prevent cracks altogether, or prevent small cracks from turning into large ones.

Use A Stiff Broom On It

A good way to keep your driveway looking clean is to use a stiff broom on it once or twice per year. The stiff broom is strong enough to remove a lot of the dirt and other debris from your driveway because it can get into all of the different crevices. If you find that some of the dirt and debris won't come up, even with the broom, then you may consider trying a pressure washer. Be sure that the pressure washer is on a low enough setting so that it won't cause any harm to your asphalt, but that it is strong enough to remove the stuck on dirt and debris effectively.

Remove Oils Or Other Damaging Fluids ASAP

If you happen to spill any oils, car fluids, or any other chemicals on your driveway, it is important that you clean them up as soon as possible. These fluids are known to stain or deteriorate your driveway, so cleaning them up can save you a great deal of time and money for repairs. To clean them up, simply use your garden hose to spray off the fluid completely and then use a scrubbing brush to remove any remaining residue and spray with your hose once again.
